About the event
elrose's history is defined by the ancient Cistercian Melrose Abbey, founded in 1136 by King David I. A site of ancient occupation, with Roman and Celtic predecessors, Melrose grew around the monastery, becoming a rich medieval center. After suffering multiple attacks and the effects of the Reformation, the abbey's ruins were later restored by Sir Walter Scott.
Early Settlements:The area has been occupied for over 3,000 years, including Roman presence and the earlier 7th-century Columban monastery at Old Melrose.
Cistercian Abbey:The current Melrose Abbey was founded in 1136 by King David I as the first Cistercian monastery in Scotland. The monks came from Rievaulx Abbey in England and significantly developed the area's agriculture.
Medieval Wealth:The abbey became a powerful religious, economic, and agricultural hub, but its proximity to the English border made it a frequent target during conflicts.
