HISTORY IN AND AROUND THE AREA
HOLY ISLAND
Holy Island's history is dominated by its status as an important center of early Christianity, founded in 635 AD by St. Aidan, and later becoming associated with St. Cuthbert, a significant figure in the production of the Lindisfarne Gospels. The island suffered a devastating Viking raid in 793 AD, which marked the beginning of a period of disruption, but a religious community was re-established in the 11th century as a Benedictine priory. Later history includes the construction of Lindisfarne Castle in the 16th century to protect against Scottish raids, and its subsequent transformation into a holiday home in the 20th century.
Early Christianity (7th–9th centuries)
Foundation: St. Aidan, a missionary from the Irish monastery of Iona, founded a monastery on the island in AD 635 at the request of King Oswald of Northumbria.
